After an exceptional year 2020, the number of companies established in Switzerland continued to grow strongly in the first quarter, especially in March. Unlike previous months, bankruptcies also increased in March.

In the first three months of 2021, 13,155 companies were created, which means a jump of 15.3%. In addition, around 5,047 companies were registered in the cantonal commercial register in March alone. “It’s a second record month,” Swiss creditors’ union Creditreform said on Friday.

If this positive trend continues, “more than 50,000 growth by 2021 cannot be ruled out”, estimates the St Wales Authority.

At the same time, the number of companies deregistered from commercial registers, in particular due to bankruptcies, increased by 2.1% year-on-year to 7,764.

The net growth of companies created during the first three months was thus 41.5%, or 5,391 new companies.

Returning to the bankruptcy of companies, Creditreform recalls that from January to March, the number of companies that have put the key to the door fell by 14% to 1,216 in one year. However, for the month of March alone, this figure is 8.9% weighted to 487.

The evolution of this number depends on the easing of existing health restrictions, but also on the impact of the aid provided by the confederation to companies, indicates the press release.

Creditreform estimates that it is very likely that bankruptcies will increase slightly in the coming months.
