Tahiti: Why is the RSA not yet in place?
The Active Solidarity Income (RSA) is a system put in place by the public authorities to counter the effects of the crisis. It is available in most regions, but not currently in French Polynesia. So why isn’t RSA applicable there yet? Explanations.
A little history
The purpose of the Active Solidarity Income is to supplement the incomes of the poorest people. This system was introduced in 2009 to replace and improve the old social assistance for those living in precarious conditions. French deputies voted for the RSA when they recognized that other social aid (except unemployment benefits) was not enough to get by.
The case of Tahiti
Before being able to benefit from the advantages offered by the RSA, users must meet certain criteria, in particular being in a fragile economic situation and not having the resources to pay their bills. Unfortunately, in the case of Tahiti, these criteria are not met because the standard of living in Polynesia is much higher than what is observed in metropolitan areas.
In addition, employees in the private sector, namely tourism and fishing, benefit on average from a higher net salary than in the rest of the metropolis, which means that they do not have recourse to social assistance. . This is why it is not possible to set up the RSA on the island of Tahiti.
Existing alternatives
Even if the RSA is not available in Tahiti, citizens in need benefit from other social aids such as the Personalized Autonomy Allowance (APA), and the Complement of Free Choice of Childcare (CMG). These aids are granted by the community and their amount is calculated according to the situation of beneficiaries.
In addition, national organizations such as the National Union of Indebted Households (UNME) offer additional aid in the form of loans or support for people in difficulty.
Conclusion
The RSA has not yet been set up in Tahiti due to a lack of sufficient resources. Fortunately, residents can still benefit from other social supports and services provided by local businesses and organizations. If you live in Tahiti and are having financial difficulties, do not hesitate to turn to these alternatives to try to find a solution.
