Mountain Law 2021: what you need to know
Here’s what you need to know about the 2021 mountain law: if you drive on a mountain road in winter, you must have tires suitable for winter conditions. This law comes into force on November 1, 2021 and applies to all vehicles, light and heavy. If you do not respect this law, you risk a fine of 135 euros.
Tires should be suitable for winter conditions as they provide better grip on snow and ice. Snow chains are also mandatory when driving in harsh winter conditions.

In some parts of Canada, people must change their winter tires between November 15 and April 15. If you live in a mountainous area or use your vehicle for winter activities, you may need to install chains on your tires. Winter tires are designed to provide better traction and slip resistance on snowy and icy roads. Winter tires have softer rubber that grips the road better. Winter tires are also equipped with lugs or deep grooves that help remove snow and ice from the surface of the tire.
If you are using winter tires, you should also have a pair of snow chains in your vehicle. Snow chains should be fitted to the front wheels if you have front wheel drive. If you have rear wheel drive, snow chains should be fitted to the rear wheels. If necessary, snow chains can also be fitted to all four wheels.
