Geological trip on Etna with Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff

Voyage géologique sur l'Etna avec Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff

At the beginning of 2021, volcanologist Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff took part in a trip organized by “80 Days Voyages” to Mount Etna in full eruption in Sicily. Here is the movie that was made of it.

For many French-speaking volcano enthusiasts over 40, the volcanology virus has been caught with documentaries and books by Haroun Tazieff, Maurice and Katia Krafft. For those who want to follow in their footsteps, access to an erupting volcano necessarily involves a pilgrimage to the Aeolian Islands and the slopes of Etna.

Younger generations may be more familiar with the books and images of volcanologist Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff, who succeeded the others after their death. Futura then provided Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff with a blog, Volcanmania, and joined the geological and volcanological trips organized by “80 Days Voyages” with Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff as scientific consultant and Sylvain Chermette as guide. Here are some of their recent adventures on Etna in fact.

Indeed, on February 16, 2021, the southeast crater of Etna had triggered a spectacular Strombolian activity with lava fountains that can rise up to 600 m above sea level and flows accompanied by sporadic explosions of the crater. Voragine. Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff and Sylvain Chermette were quick to take the direction of Sicily, probably with a plane bound for Catania and its airport, Fontanarossa, well known to Homo volcanicus.

In fact, it is only a few tens of kilometers from Catania that Etna, the largest volcano in Europe, stands on a par with Cantal, in France, as Jacques-Marie Bardintzeff, while recalling that it measures 50 km in diameter, it culminates at around 3,300 m and this stratovolcano is around 500,000 years old.
